Frequently Asked Questions
1. How old does my child need to be to start tennis lessons?
There is no correct age but generally children need to know their left hand from their right hand, can connect sometimes with a bat to a ball and can concentrate for approximately ½ hour without getting too tired.
Most importantly the child is eager to play!
2. Do I need to purchase a racquet for my child before commencing lessons?
No. At Kelly Tennis we have loan racquets available for your child to use in the lessons. If you would then like to purchase a racquet, Kelly Tennis can arrange that for you at a discount price.
3. How long are the tennis lessons?
These vary in time depending on the age and level of the student. For beginners they are ½ hour classes with 4 students per coach. For intermediate or advanced students they can be ¾ hour to 1 hour for squad players.
4. What happens if it rains?
If it has been raining all day the lesson is postponed to the last week of the school term when the lesson is made up on court. If it starts raining mid-way through a lesson the lesson is then completed in the clubhouse.
5. What happens if my child misses a lesson?
If a student misses a lesson due to ill health or injury the lesson will be made-up at a convenient time in that term. Parents must notify Kelly Tennis of the above. This is the ONLY time missed lessons will be made-up.Lessons will NOT be made up for holidays,school camps or concerts etc.
6. Can my child progress to competitive tennis?
Yes. At Kelly Tennis we encourage students to play competitive tennis to further develop their skills. At Canterbury Tennis Club,Kelly Tennis selects junior competition teams. This offers our students a friendly and smooth transition from coaching to competitive play which enhances their enjoyment and further development.
7. Does my child require any special clothing/footwear to learn tennis?
Students need tennis shoes (no ripples soles allowed) and a cap or hat in Term 1 and Term 4.
